Re: OT/PT couple interested in traveling

I don't think it matters whether you guys work for the same company or not - in fact I would encourage you to have him look with a couple companies. In my mind there's really no benefit to you two working for the same company, because you're going to be on separate contracts anyways. Expand your hor...

Re: California license

Oh California.... I haven't heard that the taxes are high there, I wouldn't worry about it too much - the difference is probably not that huge.... I just looked it up, CA income tax is tiered (the more you make the more you are taxed), but you'd likely be taxed at 8-9%. Where I used to live in Maine...

Re: Travel therapy companies

Hi Jean,

As far as the healthcare coverage goes, I am usually able to get $1 per hour extra by carrying my own insurance.

I'll get in touch with you about my recruiters.

Good luck!

James

Re: Travel therapy companies

You've hit the nail on the head with your observations - larger companies are going to be less personal, though they may have more jobs. Not to totally generalize, but I also find a lot of the larger companies don't pay as well, however, they may have better resources for you. So, mixed bag, but tha...

Re: Thanks for creating this site! Few questions..

Hello! I like your early motivation to get involved in specialty practice and that you're thinking about travel. But, please keep an open mind as you head into PT school and let opportunities present themselves to you, you may end up taking some paths you never expected. As a guy who originally plan...

Re: Traveling PT with a family

Jeanette, I wish I could offer first hand info on traveling with a family, I'll try to see if I can get someone else to comment on here who may have experience moving their family (a close friend just came to mind who recently started traveling with her non-PT husband and young child). Traveling wit...

Re: Housing

Definitely go Sox! And currently more important, go Pats! Think of your pay package as a single amount no matter how it is allocated (of course you can feel free to negotiate more). Within this single amount, if pay is going towards housing, it has to come out of somewhere else - likely your hourly....

Re: Interviewing

Shanmcnic, How I handle post-interview thank you's is to determine how I feel at the end of the conversation. Sometimes, an interview is ended with indication that you will definitely be asked to accept the position, pending pay package and details to be worked out with the travel company. In that c...

Re: potential traveler questions

Hi there! I should have access to find your email on here... I'll shoot you over my recruiter recommendations. I say if you have the urge to get on the road, go for it. There's absolutely no downside, it's only 13 week contracts - you can stop traveling after any number of assignments if you find tr...

Re: Travel therapy companies

Tina, I don't think you'll regret the decision to travel. I consider it a win-win. If you go on an assignment or two and find it's not for you, it's not forever, it's just a few months. But the upside is the adventure of a lifetime! I say get out there on the road and see it all! I'll email you ASAP...

Re: Insurance question

The quick answer is that yes I carry my own insurance. I originally would take the agencies' insurance (which is typically very good) and know that I had COBRA as a backup if something happened between assignments. It became a bit of a pain switching all the time, so I just got my own - at the time ...

Re: Questions

Brian, I have been traveling with my wife, also a PT, for 7 years. We love it and couldn't imagine having taken any other path. I suspect that in the next few years we may have to consider "settling down" - whatever that means. We've worked in a ton of different cool places and in a lot of different...

Re: Questions

Brian, Pay is always a tough one to know what you could/should be making. Pay rates do vary greatly by region or state and will also vary setting to setting. For instance, I have heard of pay rates in California that are particularly good, especially desireable place like the Rocky Mountains and Haw...

Re: Questions

Murphy, Sorry I haven't replied sooner! You have an advantage coming from a couple years in Ortho, that experience will let you grab some private practice and other outpatient jobs that aren't necessarily available to just anybody! Here is a link I always refer people to about getting started with t...
