ORTHO Resources

Unread post by Hobohealth » Wed Aug 28, 2013 7:49 pm

What I'm starting with here are the resources I have used for CEUs and general day-to-day references for my own treatments. These are just a few of the many, many resources out there to "bone" up on what's the latest in Ortho PT.

Feel free to add to this list of resources that can serve as a resource for travel PTs and PTAs.

As a traveler, continuing education can be difficult to come by. Without a consistent employer funding it, with your practice always changing, and with the constant growth that occurs moving from setting to setting, many of us can be found guilty of falling behind on our formal CEUs. Here's two places I have picked up some CEUs on my own time, in my own location:

APTA's Orthopaedic Section has THE experts in Ortho PT researching and developing new materials all the time. Here is a link to their independent study courses (ISCs). These are high quality written courses that you study on your own time at home, complete the test afterwards, and mail it in for your CEUs. They can be pricey if you are not an APTA member, but become cheaper if you are an APTA Member, and cheaper still if you are an Ortho Section Member.

Mike Reinhold has found a soft place in my heart. He graduated from Northeastern University, my alma mater, and is the PT for the Red Sox, my team. However, outside of the Boston area, he is most know for his shoulder research with Kevin Wilk. He has developed a large online following and offers a lot of online education. I took an 8-week online shoulder course through his website that was much like a lot of online university courses and really stepped up my treatments a notch.

Evidence In Motion (EIM) has created quite a name for themselves in the online world. They have a bunch of big names in the Ortho world associated with their site. While they have transitioned into more advanced PT education, they still offer quite a bit of online education. Here's a link to their online offerings.

Here's a free resource from the Orthopaedic Section. This is a very novel, forward-looking project that is still in it's early years. The section is creating guidelines for treating the most common orthopaedic conditions based entirely on published research. Eight of these guidelines have been published at this time and more are published each year. The database will continue to grow and will become the standards for orthopaedic practice in our profession. A lot of jargon in there, but if you can cut through that and get to the meat and potatoes, these are really awesome resources.

A co-worker showed me this resource this week. You can search by body part and by condition... just a ton of Ortho information. Check it out, click around, pretty cool.
