Obtaining PT licenses in multiple states is expensive, time consuming, and redundant.

We need to think about creating some sort of 'bridge' for traveling PTs so that the typical licensing process can be streamlined. As of now, obtaining a license in a new state consists of an application, FSBPT score verification, each state you are or have been licensed in verification, school transcript, and sometimes other things. Most of these things must be done by mail in most states. Antiquated.

I think if one has passed the licensure test, it is clear that he/she has graduated from college, and if other states have licensed that individual, he/she probably passed the test. You can look up any PT license on each state's website.

Any ideas?

Just a more recent update on this topic:

After a long, long process applying for licensure in AK last year, I spoke with FSBPT about the situation that many of us travelers run into. Many licenses means a lot of verifications that are mostly required in paper form sent through snail mail - the process gets really time consuming!!!!

The person I spoke with at FSBPT told me that increasing portability of PT licenses between states is currently a goal of theirs. She used Indiana as an example. Indiana is now requiring electronic verification from other states and will not accept paper verification. Hip-hip Hooray! From my perspective, this is a great start, and I hope more states adopt practices like these.

FSBPT, however, has no plans to pursue a national registry, like physiology has, or co-ops, like those found in nursing. They say there's not a great demand for it at this point and that there are actually constitutional laws allowing states the right to regulate professional licenses independently that may make the change difficult.

I have not yet started traveling yet, but, the one company I spoke with said that they will pay for licensure. However, after reading on here I see I need to start getting my lisense in the states I want to go way in advance. How would the company pay if I have to get it before I even commit to an agency? Does anyone have experience with a company paying for the lisense? if so, has anyone ran into a problem of one company paying for lisense and then you not deciding to go with that company? Thanks!!!!

It is typical for an agency to reimburse your licensure fees if they employ you in that state, so keep records.

I have heard of companies that will help get new licenses for you - ie help with the forms and verifications, but have no experience personally with this. Honestly, I think it ticks off the state licensure staff when agencies are contacting them - anyone else have experience with this?
